High School Artists Win Congressional Competition

Islip High School freshman Melanie Marroquin and sophomore Luna Mendoza recently won honorable mention designations in the 2022 Artistic Discovery competition, sponsored by the Congressional Institute.

Each spring since 1982, this high school visual art competition has served to recognize and encourage artistic talent across the nation and in each congressional district. This year’s theme was “America the Beautiful.” Marroquin and Mendoza’s artwork will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol.  

“Our community was exceptionally proud to be represented in this nationwide competition,” said Brian Kroll, Islip’s former director of fine and performing arts . “Congratulations to Luna, Melanie and their teacher, Ms. Jenna DeBobes, for this outstanding achievement.”
