Islip High School recognized 32 outstanding seniors for earning the New York State Seal of Biliteracy during a May 28 ceremony in the school’s cafeteria. This prestigious honor is bestowed on high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in one or more languages in addition to English. The Seal is affixed to each student’s diploma and high school transcript.
Guyveline Jean-Charles, John Oggeri and Kathryn Quinn earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Italian, while Jasmin Argueta Arriaza, Jazmin Benitez, Rafael Bonilla, Emely Crespo, Diego Delgado, Luna Fajardo Restrepo, Isabella Field, Emily Flora, Elizabeth Ford, Jack Limbach, Alessandro Llamoca Perfecto, Thomas Longobardi, Aliannah Madriz, Melanie Marroquin, Nicole Matute, Kevin Medina-Argueta, Ryder Miranda, Jake Mulholland, Ashly Ordonez, Jailany Pacheco, Juan Camilo Salcedo Pacheco, Nicolas Salcedo Pacheco, Adrian Pantaleon, Kevin Sanchez, Jake Teuschler, Isabela Ulloa, Bryan Vidal Diaz, Aiden Zaneski and Sofia Zurbaran earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish.
Additionally, juniors Joshua Alarcon, Isabel Arieta, Mercy Martinez, Kevin Matute, Emilia Ortega Yepez, Nicholas Santiago and Misael Vargas Martinez were recognized as Seal candidates demonstrating proficiency in Spanish research.
This was Islip’s fourth ceremony since initiating the Seal of Biliteracy program, with this year’s event overseen by Seal of Biliteracy advisers Sarah Ito, Karen Maisano, Claudia Osorio and Pina Prainito. Certificates were presented by Board of Education President Philip Dineen, Superintendent Dr. Dennis O’Hara and Principal Dr. Lara Gonzalez.
