In fifth-grade social studies classes at Commack Road, students are working on the geography of the Western Hemisphere. To learn the difference between absolute and relative locations, the fifth-graders used yarn maps to help identify latitude and longitude. Students tied yarn strips to the Mercator projection maps and moved the strings in comparison to the equator and prime meridian in order to confirm the absolute location of a place.
