While students across the U.S. were dressing in character for Halloween, the fifth-graders at Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School dressed as famous figures from history and today for the annual Biography Day. In preparation for the day, the students were responsible for researching the life of a famous person, writing a report, and presenting their report to classmates in character in an entertaining and interesting way.

Following their oral presentations, each fifth-grader fielded questions from their audience and then paraded through the school hallways in costume to the delight of the younger students. Popular figures this year included musicians Katy Perry and John Lennon, sports figures Hope Solo and Vince Lombardi, and historical figures Amelia Earhart and Benjamin Franklin. Pictured in their Biography Day characters are students from Richard Velazquez’s class.
