Inspired by Stephen Covey’s “Leader in Me” and “7 Habits of Happy Kids,” the Commack Road learning community strives to help students understand what it means to be a productive citizen in school and beyond. In order to emphasize how to be proactive and kind, the Commack Road Lighthouse Committee sponsored a schoolwide activity highlighting acts of kindness on campus.

Third grade students in co-teachers Shannon Dignam’s and Meghan Flynn’s class were each given a construction paper light bulb and instructed to write about “When I was Kind” or “I saw someone doing something kind.” After the lightbulbs were colored, they were hung on the class’s bulletin board to resemble strings of lights. As peers passed the Light Up the World with Kindness bulletin board, they were able to read about all kind acts by fellow students.
