First grade students in Justin Lollo’s class at Wing Elementary School in the Islip School District took a bite out of hunger this holiday season by making 184 bologna sandwiches for Bethany House, a shelter in Bay Shore. Mr. Lollo has been hosting the community service project since 2018, and he happily reported that the students broke the old record by making 47 additional sandwiches this year.

In addition to learning their core subjects, the first graders discussed and learned that there are people in the community who are struggling. “I want my students to realize that there are people who are less fortunate than we are, and they might find it difficult having enough money to obtain food, clothing, etc.,” Mr. Lollo explained. “In preparing bologna sandwiches, students can feel a sense of giving and make a difference by supporting those who are less fortunate.”

Mr. Lollo also thanks Grilli’s Gourmet Deli and Catering for donating the bologna for the project.
