IHSIslip School District teachers and support staff participated in targeted professional learning during Superintendent’s Conference Day on Tuesday, November 3.

Staff collaborated on curriculum planning, reviewed student data and completed specialized training to strengthen instruction and student services.

Elementary Instruction and Collaboration

Teachers in grades K–5 focused on curriculum development and collaborative planning.

Kindergarten and first-grade teachers worked with instructional leaders and grade-level colleagues on literacy and mathematics, then used professional learning community time to refine instruction and plan next steps.

Teachers in grades 2–5 prepared science units for classroom instruction, while those in grades 3–5 also analyzed student data to identify trends and instructional priorities. Fifth-grade teachers met with sixth-grade colleagues at the middle school to align science instruction and support students’ transition from elementary to secondary school.
Elementary Academic Intervention Services (AIS) teams focused on New York State assessment readiness. English as a New Language (ENL) teachers completed WIDA test administration preparation to support multilingual learners.

Secondary Curriculum and Assessment

Secondary teachers focused on curriculum alignment, assessment practices and student support across subject areas.

AIS reading and mathematics teachers participated in sessions related to New York State assessments and met to strengthen connections among assessment results, interventions and student needs. Non-AP mathematics teachers were encouraged to update midterm examinations and explore alternative assessment methods that give students meaningful opportunities to demonstrate mastery.

Middle and high school science teachers in non-AP courses collaborated on planning across grade levels. Social studies teachers in grades 6–8 and high school non-AP courses reviewed and updated curriculum scope and sequences and identified performance tasks for each grade. World language teachers worked on alignment within and across grade levels, while technology and EXCEL teams advanced their scope-and-sequence planning.
Secondary ENL staff prepared for WIDA test administration and reviewed strategies to support multilingual learners during testing. Middle and high school English teachers worked on instructional planning, including selecting high-interest independent reading materials and developing grade-level resources and assignments aligned with performance expectations.

Professional Learning in the Arts, Music, Physical Education and Health

Art, music, physical education and health teachers participated in professional learning specific to their disciplines.
Art teachers attended the NYSATA Art Education Seminar with NYSATA/SBU to explore instructional practices and opportunities to enrich students’ artistic learning. Music teachers attended the NYSCAME Suffolk Symposium Day for Music Educators at Connetquot High School, where they collaborated with peers and shared strategies to support musical growth.

Physical education and health teachers attended the Suffolk Zone Conference at Riverhead High School, participated in presentations, and explored resources to strengthen their programs and support student well-being.

Student Services and Safety

Special education staff, psychologists, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists and physical therapists participated in NYSED Transition Indicator 13 training. Paraprofessionals and teaching assistants completed AED/CPR refresher training, Stop the Bleed awareness and professional learning related to individualized education programs.

Counseling and school support teams also participated in professional development focused on student guidance and college decision-making.

The day provided dedicated time for staff to coordinate instruction, strengthen specialized services and prepare to meet students’ academic, developmental and safety needs.
