Class of 2022 graduate Alexis Bates is Islip High School’s first candidate to successfully complete the requirements set forth by New York State to earn the Seal of Civic Readiness. Her project, “Musicians Helping Musicians,” studied the effects that music has on students and proposed an initiative for a music mentoring program in the Islip School District. Under this program, high school musicians would work with younger students, offering guidance while sharing their love of music.

New York State is in the pilot process of creating the Seal of Civic Readiness for graduating students, with the intent of encouraging the study of civics and civility through experiential learning. The Seal will also serve to provide employers with a method of identifying high school graduates with civics skills, provide universities with an additional method of evaluating applicants seeking admission, recognize the value of K-12 social studies education as a means to build civic knowledge, and to prepare students with 21st-century skills and empower them as agents of positive social change.
