Islip Students Showcase Neuroscience Research at Stony Brook STEM Symposium

Students from Islip High School recently attended the Stony Brook University WISE/Pre-College STEM Symposium, where they presented year-long research projects focused on neuroscience and biopsychology.
Over two semesters, Islip students explored current topics in neuroscience while conducting hands-on experiments on sensory perception, memory, and brain function in both humans and fruit flies. The experience provided students with the opportunity to apply classroom learning in a university-level research environment.
As part of the program, students worked closely with Stony Brook graduate student Ariel Nieves, who served as both a mentor and role model during the 10-week lab and classroom experience. Under her guidance, students developed research skills, gained exposure to scientific inquiry, and strengthened their understanding of neuroscience through collaborative experimentation and presentation.
The symposium served as a culminating experience for the students, allowing them to showcase their findings and celebrate a year of academic exploration and achievement in STEM.
