Islip Handles Hunger Tackles Food Insecurity, Powered by Student Leadership and Community Support

Islip Handles Hunger, a local chapter of the national nonprofit Blessings in a Backpack, is committed to supporting children in need by providing food for weekends and school breaks throughout the academic year. The organization ensures that students who rely on school meals have access to food when school is not in session, addressing a critical, often-overlooked need in the community.
Led by administrators Kate O’Callaghan and Rabia Hirji, along with co-presidents Kristy Evans and Hilary Breig, the program is driven by a dedicated group of volunteers focused on making a meaningful difference in the lives of local children.
This year, Islip High School senior John Swindells has taken on a key role through his civics project by partnering with Islip Handles Hunger. Serving as a student liaison, John has immersed himself in the organization’s mission, attending meetings, learning the program’s operations, and contributing ideas to expand its reach, including efforts to raise community awareness.
His impact has already been significant. Through his leadership, John has raised more than $600 and collected numerous food donations to support children in need. His compassion, initiative, and commitment to service reflect the power of student-driven community engagement.
Islip Handles Hunger continues to rely on community support. Those interested in donating, volunteering, or organizing a fundraiser are encouraged to contact the organization at islipblessingsinabackpack@gmail.com
With strong leadership, committed volunteers, and passionate student advocates like John, Islip Handles Hunger is making a lasting impact by ensuring that no child in the community goes hungry.
