AP Government Students Bring Civics to Life During Immersive LIU Experience

Posted Date: 02/12/26 (10:30 PM)

White HouseIslip High School students stepped beyond the textbook and into the heart of American government during a recent field trip to LIU, where Mrs. LiPetri’s AP Government class, accompanied by Coordinator Dr. Drysielski, participated in an immersive and hands-on learning experience.

The visit gave students the opportunity to tour detailed replicas of White House rooms, transforming their classroom studies into a vivid, real-world experience. Walking through the historic spaces helped students better visualize the setting where some of the nation’s most significant decisions are made.

One of the most memorable moments of the trip took place in a replica of the White House Situation Room. There, students participated in an interactive role-playing simulation, assuming the roles of the President and Cabinet members. Tasked with addressing a real-world dilemma, they worked collaboratively to analyze information, debate potential solutions, and consider the far-reaching consequences of their decisions.

The exercise challenged students to think critically, communicate effectively, and apply their understanding of constitutional principles and executive responsibilities in a dynamic environment.
By combining experiential learning with academic rigor, the field trip offered students a deeper appreciation for the complexities of national leadership and public service. The day at LIU not only reinforced key AP Government concepts but also inspired students to see civics as a living, evolving process—one that depends on informed and engaged citizens.

For the students of Islip High School, government was no longer just a subject to study — it was an experience to step into and understand firsthand.
