Dear Islip Middle School Families,
As the crisp air and colorful leaves remind us that fall is in full swing, I hope this season finds you and your family enjoying all that fall has to offer.
October was full of energy and excitement here at Islip Middle School! Our Student Government’s Spooktacular event was a tremendous success, with many of our students volunteering their time to create a fun and safe Halloween experience for our youngest Buccaneers. Their enthusiasm and leadership made us proud; thank you to all who participated and supported the event.
Congratulations to all of our fall athletes for an outstanding season. Your hard work, teamwork, and school spirit were evident both on and off the field. As we celebrate your success, we are also looking forward to the start of Winter I sports, which will begin shortly. This season is another great opportunity for students to stay active and connected.
A huge thank you to our social workers for their partnership with representatives from Northwell Health in delivering meaningful anti-bullying assemblies to each of our teams. These sessions sparked thoughtful discussions and reminded us all of the importance of kindness, respect, and inclusion. We are very proud of our students for their engagement and reflection during these assemblies.
Our performing arts program is in full swing as well. We’re eagerly anticipating this year’s school play, Descendants, which will take the stage on November 21st and November 22nd. We encourage all students and families to come out and support this talented cast and crew!
I am excited to share that we are launching an enhanced attendance program called MOOV, which will help to support a more secure and efficient learning environment. As a part of this initiative, all students will be required to bring their Renaissance ID cards to school each day and wear them throughout the day. Each student will be provided with a lanyard and ID case to support this effort. Thank you for helping us reinforce this expectation at home.
As we move through November and into the season of gratitude, I want to thank you, our Islip students, families, and staff, for your continued partnership and support. Thank you for all that you do to make Islip Middle School a place where every student is welcome, connected, and inspired to learn. Please reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions (631) 650-8505.
Sincerely,
Meg Stern

Wishing a Good Day to our IMS Families,
Well, we are in full swing. We’ve had our second spirit week in honor of Red Ribbon Week, “Good Choices Positive Voices.” We’ve had a visit in October from Cohen Children’s Medical Center regarding bullying prevention and awareness. We are looking for Marina, Cohen Children’s Medical Centers Community Educator to return in the spring to discuss health classes to educate students about the impact vaping has on overall health and the breakdown of myths vs facts in the world of vaping.
Our advisory theme for November is empathy, gratitude, & thankfulness. Staff and students are doing a wonderful job at creating a connection to their school as well as their community. Some activities will include our building bulletin board. In November, we remember to be grateful as IMS advisories cultivate thankfulness amongst students and staff.
The CARE Club is continuing their Donation Drive Advisory Contest until November 20th. Popular donations have been stuffing, cake mix, canned veggies, soups, gravy, juices, and coffee. Please feel free to send in a non-perishable contribution; it will go to good use and have a positive impact on someone’s celebration.
Wednesday, November 13th is World Kindness Day. IMS will recognize that day by vowing to act with kindness! Advisories will receive post-it notes and students will share a positive message which will be displayed throughout the school.
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the BIG things.

Dear Islip Middle School Community,
What another great month it has been as we continue our amazing start to the school year! Congratulations to our fall student-athletes on completing an outstanding season — we are so proud of your effort, teamwork, and dedication.
Our after-school clubs are off to a fantastic start as well, providing students with opportunities to explore their interests, build new skills, and connect with peers.
Throughout October, we have focused on anti-bullying, making healthy choices, and staying drug-free, concluding the month with grade-level assemblies centered on these important topics.
As Halloween approaches, we were thrilled to host our annual IMS Spooktacular — a fun, well-attended event that brought our community together for an evening of creativity, laughter, and school spirit.
Looking ahead, November brings plenty to look forward to! The IMS PTA will host a Stranger Things fundraiser at United Skates on November 5th, which promises to be a great time for students and families. We will also celebrate kindness and gratitude throughout the month as we head into the holiday season.
We’re also excited for the start of Early Winter sports and can’t wait to see our Drama Club perform The Descendants later this month.
Looking forward to another great month here at IMS!
Sincerely,
David Bodner

October is always a wonderful time in the guidance office. Whether we’re greeting new faces, dreaming about what’s ahead, or joining in on Spirit Week fun, there’s always something to look forward to! The counselors teamed up with some veteran students to host our annual “New Entrant Breakfast” to officially welcome and celebrate the students just beginning their journey here at Islip Middle School. We enjoyed a morning full of fun and connection—playing games, breaking the ice with interactive activities, snacking on tasty bagels and cookies, culminating in a escape-style challenge filled with puzzles and brain teasers. Whether you were new to Islip or a longtime Buccaneer, a great time was had by all. Here’s a glimpse into the exciting morning we had:
Speaking of our longtime Buccaneers, our eighth graders had the incredible opportunity to attend Islip High School’s annual college fair. This event gave students the valuable opportunity to connect one-on-one with college representatives, ask meaningful questions, and explore a wide range of post-secondary possibilities. Participating in events like these plays an important role in the college planning journey, helping students uncover programs and pathways that match their individual interests and aspirations. It’s never too soon to start thinking ahead, and we encourage all students to take advantage of the experiences Islip has to offer!
Warmly,
Ms. Comiskey, Ms. Appel, & Ms. Garren

Our 6th grade social studies students recently brought geography to life with their creative map projects! Using materials like salt dough, pizza boxes, pumpkins, craft paper, felt, and paint, students designed colorful political, physical, and special purpose maps. Each project showcased their understanding of map features such as keys, legends, and compass roses—while adding a fun, hands-on twist to learning about the world. The results were both educational and impressive displays of creativity and teamwork!
