Sherwood Elementary Students Choose Gaga Ball Pit Through Civics Lesson

Posted Date: 10/01/25 (8:27 AM)

Gaga SESIf you’ve noticed a new gaga ball pit behind Sherwood Elementary School, it’s more than just a fun addition to the playground. The pit is the result of a unique civics lesson tied to last year’s election season, when students cast ballots to choose between two exciting options: a gaga ball pit or a book vending machine.

The project provided students with a firsthand experience of the democratic process, helping them understand the importance of voting and how collective decisions can shape their school community. By making the election both age-appropriate and engaging, teachers were able to connect lessons about civic responsibility to something students could see and use every day.

“Teaching about the election in elementary school offers a unique opportunity for us to foster a sense of empowerment, encouraging students to see themselves as active participants in their democracy, even at a young age,” said Principal Briana James, “and it’s the perfect addition to our playground!”

A gaga pit is a fantastic addition to recess because it’s fast-paced, fun, and inclusive for everyone.

Gaga ball allows students of all skill levels to jump in and play together, making it a game where no one has to sit out for long.

Since rounds move quickly, lots of kids get the chance to participate, and everyone stays engaged. Its simple rules mean students can start playing right away, and its emphasis on dodging and quick thinking (rather than strength or size) helps level the playing field. A gaga pit brings energy, teamwork, and excitement to recess, creating a space where everyone can join the fun.
