Commack Road had an extra special event in store for the annual Flag Day celebration on June 14, holding two dedications beforehand in the school’s lobby, inspired by the school’s history.

A new flag remembrance wall displayed American flags that were flown over battlefields in Iraq during Operation Inherent Resolve, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The flags were donated to the Commack Road community by military members Tyree Bacon, Matthew Infante and Charles Valdes, who were honored guests at the event. A bronze plaque in the top right corner of that wall was provided by the Class of 1978 reunion team in honor of those who have served the country and the community.

A wooden showcase was also dedicated in honor of the late staff member Barbara Corbett, a graduate from the Class of 1978.

“Mrs. Corbett was one of the first people that I met after becoming the principal here, and she truly embodied in mind and spirit all that it meant to be CRES,” said Principal James Cameron. “Unfortunately, we lost Mrs. Corbett too soon after a battle with cancer. It is our hope that she will live in spirit and soul through this remembrance and her family will find comfort through our love and tribute to an amazing woman that viewed CRES as her school.”

Following the dedications, attendees enjoyed a parade led by members of the local American Legion Rusy Bohm Post 411 and Commander Dominick DeCrescenzo, a stirring flag raising, and performances of patriotic music by the CRES TrebleMakers vocal ensemble and CRES Level II Band.

Student awards were presented to second-grade contest winner Teagan Ahlgren, third-grade contest winner Alyssa Williams, fourth-grade contest winner Yusra Ishtiaq, fifth-grade contest winner Hannah Smith, academic award winner William Cheung and music award winner Avery Roche.
