Things got a bit messy at Commack Road’s recent PB&J Day when second grade teachers challenged their students with an “exact direction” assignment as part of a nonfiction writing unit. The task required students to write about how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. These directions were then followed by the teacher exactly as written to attempt to make a sandwich. The goal was to model the importance of using precise details in writing.

“It got messy but was definitely memorable and fun,” teacher Jennifer Beck said.
