When second graders in Cheryl Brown and Don Dowdell’s class at Commack Road heard the story of 98-year-old local veteran Nick Leo voting in person on Election Day, they decided to take the time to honor him and cheer him up. The students sent Leo letters and small gifts for Veterans Day.

“Coming from a family of veterans, I was compelled to take action after hearing Mr. Leo’s story from his grandson, FDNY Captain Mike Leo,” said Brown. “I am humbled that Nick and his family were so touched, and I am honored to be a small part or such an amazing life story.”

“We teach our students at Commack Road to be in service to others and to always honor our veterans,” said Principal James Cameron. “After seeing the giant smile on Mr. Leo’s face, the students decided that they would like to continue to share correspondence with him throughout the year.”
