As
part of a distance learning unit on geometry, Commack Road third
graders took on a “Tape-estry” Challenge. Each student was asked to
create a design with tape and sidewalk chalk, using geometric shapes
such as triangles, squares, rectangles, diamonds and rhombuses, then
explain the design with any combination of mathematical systems
including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions.
Students with limited concrete canvas space could use anything they
could find around the house to meet the challenge, such as paper,
rulers, crayons and paint.
“The response to the challenge
was overwhelming, as students took to their driveways, their porches,
and garages to create extraordinary geo-art,” said teacher Brian Smith.
The
initial inspiration for the activity came from student Keleigh Franz, who had sent in driveway chalk art she created with her
siblings, guided by their mother in an effort to keep them
intellectually stimulated while providing a fun outdoor activity to work
on as a family.
