Islip fourth- and fifth-graders from Commack Road and Sherwood found success competing in the 34th annual Town of Islip Sharp Shooter Basketball Contest on March 7, with two young athletes named place winners.

Commack Road’s Hailey Alvarez won first place for fifth-grade girls, while Sherwood’s Jackson Doring earned second for fifth-grade boys. Other tournament participants included Commack Road fourth graders Morgan Lella and Liam Ryan, and fifth grader Chase Hansen; and Sherwood fourth graders Erik Kristiansen and Emmie Wallace, and fifth grader Jane Tierney.

Sponsored by the Islip Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs and Islip Elks since 1993, the Sharp Shooter “Just Say No to Drugs” program asks local students to score as many baskets as possible in one minute, improving their athletic skills and offering an alternative to drug abuse.
