The district recently unveiled a new 9/11 tree memorial, located at the east side of Islip Middle School. The centerpiece of the memorial is a Callery pear tree that was seeded from the 9/11 “Survivor Tree,” which was discovered at the site of the World Trade Center following the 2001 terrorist attack, nursed back to health and memorialized at Ground Zero. Islip received a seedling through the efforts of New York City firefighter Russell Dietz, an Islip resident and former Board of Education member. The design and development of the memorial, which includes a plaque at the base of the tree, was conceived and overseen by Assistant Superintendent for Business Michael Zeterberg and Director of Facilities Brian Graham.
