As part of a recent interdisciplinary unit on construction and creations, fifth-graders in the EXCEL program learned about 20th century Danish mathematician and game inventor Piet Hein. During the class, the students explored the soma cube, a solid dissection puzzle constructed from seven pieces made out of unit cubes, which was invented by Hein in 1936 during a quantum mechanics lecture. They then made their own soma cubes to take home.
