To commemorate Veterans Day, student government members from Islip Middle School traveled to the Long Island Veterans Home at Stony Brook University. During the visit, the students sat down in pairs to interview veterans for a living history lesson. Following the interview, the students shared what they had learned with the group. Additionally, show choir students, with the assistance of choir director Richard Magale, sang several patriotic songs, and the entire group presented the veterans with handmade cards. They also gave out gloves and knit caps as a “thank you” for the veterans’ service, just in time for the chilly winter months.

“I think it is a really important lesson for the students to know that they themselves can make a big difference in the life of another person,” remarked social worker Shari Pennington, who organized the trip to the home.
