Kindergarten students at Islip’s Wing Elementary School began their March food drive a few weeks early. As part of their celebration of the 100th day of school, the students brought in non-perishable food items, arranged them in a single line down the kindergarten hallway, and together counted the cans individually and then in groups of ten. In total, 338 cans were collected and will be donated to Long Island Cares as part of the school’s March food drive.
“What is wonderful about this activity is that it connects to the new common core curriculum by familiarizing the students with the numbers, as well as teaches them the importance of giving back to the community,” said kindergarten teacher Valarie Cordara.
