Jim Nasium (a play on “gymnasium”) made a repeat appearance at Islip’s Wing Elementary School as the kindergarten and first-grade students participated in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart fundraising program. Created last year by physical education teachers Brian Bauernfeind and Gregory Dini, the character of Jim helps to get the students excited about living a healthy lifestyle and increasing their heart rates. During the event, the students participated in heart-healthy activities such as jump rope, soccer, pushups and sit-ups. The students also put their brainpower to use by assembling a skeleton puzzle and spelling heart-healthy words. In total, the school raised more than $2,500.
