Freshman and sophomore students at Islip High School received a firsthand account of life as a soldier when local veterans visited their social studies classes on Nov. 13. During the visit, an event organized by social studies teachers Ted Blanchard and Melissa LiPetri for the past eight years, the students listened intently as the veterans – spanning more than 70 years of military experience – shared their stories and their involvement in conflicts ranging from World War II to the current Iraq War. Offering a unique perspective on military life for the current students this year was Islip High School Class of 2012 alumnus Chris Papszycki. Chris returned to the school to speak with the social studies classes following his graduation from Marine Corps boot camp on Nov. 9.
“Inviting our local veterans in to speak with our classes is a great way to honor our veterans and thank them for the service they have provided us,” said Mr. Blanchard.
