Books for Troops

Kindergarten students in Katheryne Walsh’s class at Islip’s Wing Elementary School understand the importance of reading, as well as the value of community service. This holiday season, the students continued Mrs. Walsh’s tradition of collecting new and gently used paperback books to donate to members of the United States military currently stationed abroad.

In an effort to personalize the 170 books that were collected, the students carefully wrapped each novel and designed and created bookmarks to send along with each book. According to Mrs. Walsh, the books were donated to military units with a personal connection to the class, as done every year. This year, many of the books were sent to a student’s uncle who is currently stationed in Afghanistan and to Kuwait, where one of the children’s mothers has a connection with the USO. A few books will also be sent to Mrs. Walsh’s nephew, currently stationed at Fort Hood.
