On June 13, 2003, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Wing Elementary School, the kindergartners and first-graders put together a time capsule comprised of some of their favorite items. On May 21, a few members of the Islip High School Class of 2014, first-graders in 2003, returned to the school to open the capsule.
“I remember the first day of school and walking him in here as a kindergartner,” said parent Reneé Couvertier, mother of senior Austen Couvertier, who attended the time capsule opening. “Now that he is graduating, it is bittersweet to see all of these memories from when he was in first grade.”
Included in the capsule were class photos, self-portraits drawn by the kindergarteners and first-graders, “when I grow up” poems and essays and a few other items, including the front page of Newsday, and circulars and menus from local stores and restaurants.
“It’s surreal,” said senior class secretary Mariah Tyler about viewing the time capsule. “I feel like this all happened yesterday, but we’re graduating high school next month!” Senior class president Andrew Lithen added, “It’s interesting to look through all of this. It brings back some really good memories.”
The time capsule will remain at Wing for a week for the current kindergartners and first-graders to view the contents before being moved up to the high school.
