Spanning April through June, Islip’s sterling spring concert season
included impressive band, chorus and orchestra performances by the high
school (April 30 and June 9), middle school (May 6 and 14), Sherwood
(June 7 and 11) and Commack Road (May 13 and June 3). At each evening’s
show, in front of appreciative audiences of family and friends, the
student-musicians – from excited beginners to adept senior players –
displayed their deep love of music and the fruits of the top-notch
instruction provided by the district’s music staff.
“For many of
our students, this is the capstone event,” said Director of Fine and
Performing Arts Vincent Green. “They’ve worked their way up to section
leader, soloist or student conductor. After four years, students develop
a strong connection to their classmates and teachers. They see a
variety of educators in their four years here, but the constant is their
music director. It makes for a very emotional evening.”
“I am so
proud of all of the band students,” said SES band director Elaine
Perrillo, “The Level 1 fourth-graders played an awesome concert and
showed they are real musicians in the making. The Level 2 band was
wonderfully musical and exciting, a testament to their love of the
compositions.”
“It is always such a joy to see the culmination of
all the hard work the students have put in, in the form of a wonderful
performance,” said the middle school’s band director, Allison Jeanes.
“To feel the excitement as they take the stage, see the determination on
their faces as they perform and hear how far they have come over the
course of the school year – these all show the amazing effect of music
in their lives. We are very fortunate to live and work in a district
that rigorously supports the arts.”
