Leadership Through Lemonade

Sherwood fifth-graders Grace Nash and Olivia Piazzolla recently demonstrated outstanding leadership and community service, setting up their own lemonade stand and raising $235 for the Lustgarten Foundation to benefit pancreatic cancer research. The two students were inspired to help a neighbor who is suffering from the disease.

On behalf of the Board of Education, both girls received an Above and Beyond certificate for their humanitarian efforts, presented at their teacher Steven Kunsch’s classroom at Sherwood on Sept. 9 by Superintendent of Schools Susan A. Schnebel.

Schnebel praised the pair of altruistic 10-year-olds, saying, “Olivia and Grace exemplify what makes Islip so special – their sense of community.”
