Six exemplary students represented Islip at this summer’s American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State programs in upstate New York.

Current seniors Cheyenne Coughlin, Schuyler Dineen, Sean Dineen, Thomas DePaola, Lauren Shadt and Amber Yildizel gained invaluable leadership skills as they participated with students from across the state in exercises in creating and running a working government.

The Islip students attended the programs – both founded by the American Legion in the 1930s – from June 27 through July 3, the boys at Morrisville State College, and the girls at SUNY Brockport.

In addition to enhancing their knowledge of civics, Boys State and Girls State were eye-opening growth experiences for the young men and women.

“It was very humbling,” said Coughlin. “We are all really grateful to the American Legion for selecting us, and our teachers for nominating us.”
