The high school partnered with Custom Computer Specialists to present
a special Career Exploration Day on Dec. 9, providing 10th-grade
students with the chance to meet and talk with successful people in a
variety of careers.
Subtitled “The Future in Business Technology” by the students in
Islip’s Business Academy, the day focused on making the school’s
sophomores aware of the numerous available career paths, the role
technology plays in those careers and the skills that are needed to
ensure success.
The event began with a meet-and-greet breakfast. The sophomores then
transitioned to four different career presentations, based on career
interest surveys they submitted. Approximately 10 business leaders –
including North Shore-LIJ Health System, St. John’s University, Dell,
IntraLogic Solutions and Ignition Marketing – representing various
industries spoke with students and answered questions regarding their
education, training, background and inspiration, as well as “a day in
the life” of their career.
“Islip School District is working diligently to not only prepare
students for college but to be successful citizens in a global world,”
said Superintendent of School Susan Schnebel. ““In order to aim for the
future, one must know the target, but it is tough for kids to aim for a
career when they do not know what targets are available. We wanted
students to better understand what is available once they graduate from
school and college.”
