EXCEL Detectives Solve Marine Mystery

As a culminating experience following an interdisciplinary “Mysteries” unit, fourth-graders in the district’s EXCEL program for the academically gifted applied their detective skills to solve the ultimate underwater mystery.

Visiting marine archaeologist Brett Curlew supplied the students with real artifacts from a shipwreck discovered off the coast of Long Island. By piecing together the clues from each artifact, students were able to determine when the ship was built, when and why it sank, and other interesting details about the vessel and the people who were aboard.

“This hands-on experience brought history to life,” said EXCEL program coordinator Julia Johnson.
