Painting the Scene

Continuing a five-year tradition, students at Commack Road Elementary School in the Islip School District traveled to Islip High School to put their creativity to good use and help the high school students create scenery for the upcoming musical production, Grease. Hosted by high school art teacher and art director of Grease Melissa Trocchio-Cohen and Commack Road art teacher Bethany Fisher, the Commack Road students spent an hour and a half one day after school painting the backdrop for the musical.
“It’s more than just the experience of having the fifth graders work on the set,” said Mrs. Trocchio-Cohen. “It allows them the opportunity to interact with high school students and shows them the different opportunities for having a career in the art world.” Added Ms. Fisher, “It’s wonderful. The students love it and it gives them the chance to work on a big production before the Commack Road play, which is held in May.”
