For Sale: Islip High School Hosts Community Yard Sale
For ten weeks, the student body at Islip High School worked collaboratively to accumulate, sort, and clean various items donated to the school from local families, businesses, teachers, and staff. Items such as clothes, furniture, stuffed animals, bicycles, and even a guitar were then sold at a community yard sale to raise funds for earthquake victims in Haiti and Chili and flood victims in Tennessee.
“This has been an entire community effort,” said English teacher Ann Gordon, who helped organize the event with fellow teachers Barbara Wagner, Liz Tirch, and Roseann D’Amico. “In Islip we really take care of our own, but we also have to be aware that there are people outside our borders that need our help.” Added Mrs. Wagner, “The kids have been great. They have such a tremendous work ethic and without them this really would not have been possible.”
On a beautiful Saturday in June, more than 50 tables were set up in front of the high school as people perused the racks of clothing and other items, while helping raise more than $2,600. Additionally, Concord Cleaners in East Islip cleaned all of the donated coats and jackets free of charge and provided 500 hangers.
