Students Make Strong Showing at Islandwide Science Competition

Thirteen Islip High School Science Research students participated in the Long Island Science Congress islandwide science competition.

The Long Island Science Congress is a science competition open to all of the high schools in both Nassau and Suffolk counties, grades 9-12. Each school is allowed to bring 10 individual or group research projects to the competition to be judged for the science and scientific method used during the research. The students exhibit their work on a trifold board and must present to the judge and answer the judge’s questions.

During the competition, senior Michael Phalen was awarded the top prize for his project “The Effects of Zostera Marina and Argopectin Irradian on Nutrient Levels and Water Quality.” Additionally, nine Islip students – Daniel Eichner, Christa Gentile, Samantha Rodriguez, Stephanie Schneider, Emmanuel Class, Christopher Earls, Gabriella Rocco, Madison Schaefer, and Nancy Zurita – received Achievement awards; two students – Morgan Greene and Cristina Rizzo – were awarded Meritorious distinction; and one student – Cierra Scott – received Honorable Mention at the competition.
