Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Students and staff at Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School in Islip honored the 40th recognition of Earth Day in a weeklong celebration with a variety of activities to promote the three R’s: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Throughout the week, the students donated used/broken crayons and old Nike sneakers that were to be recycled by Nike and Crayola, brought their water to school in reusable water bottles rather than disposable water containers, and contributed gently used coats that were cleaned courtesy of Whitehouse Cleaners, to be donated and reused.

On the actual anniversary of Earth Day, fifth-grade students from Beth Fazio’s class attended the grand opening/ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Suffolk County Environmental Center at Seatuck @ the Scully Estate. The students planted flowers around the grounds of the estate, and prior to their visit created art projects for the ribbon-cutting.
