Keeping Islip Clean
In recognition of the 40th celebration of Earth Day, members of the Islip High School Keep Islip Clean (KIC) Club participated in their fourth annual Pond Day. This year the students assisted Seatuck in cleaning up the “party pit” of garbage that had accumulated in the woods over the last 50 years, in anticipation of the grand opening of the Scully mansion as a museum, outdoor learning center, and nature preserve.
“Much of what we do cannot be accomplished in the classroom setting, so it is important that students participate and volunteer in their community as part of become well-rounded citizens,” said Wayne Mennecke, KIC advisor. “It also gives them a sense of ownership over something greater than what they do in school. It’s nice to know so many students truly do care.”
Previous Pond Day activities had all taken place within the courtyard at Islip High School, where students built a pond, assembled benches/desks, and planted gardens and trees to convert the area into an outdoor classroom.
