Ducks at Wing
For one week in March, kindergarten and first-grade students at Wing Elementary School in Islip were tasked with caring for a newborn baby – a baby duck that is. The ducklings were picked up by first-grade teacher Lucy DeLise from Massey Duck Farm still encased in their eggs, and the students were in charge of ensuring that they were properly heated. Once hatched, the students had to feed and water the ducklings before they made their way back to the duck farm. To prepare for the ducklings, Ms. DeLise’s class read the book “Chickens Aren’t The Only Ones” by Ruth Heller, which tells a story about various egg-laying animals and their unique eggs.
