Shadow Day
Under the supervision of mentors in a host of professions, more than 100 sophomores from Islip High School spent Groundhog’s Day getting a firsthand taste of fields such as law and order, medicine, mortuary science, nutrition, fashion, education, and politics.
Continuing a yearly tradition, the Islip Careers Department at Islip High School, in cooperation with the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island, sponsored the Groundhog Job Shadow Day. Throughout the day, the students worked hand-in-hand with such local businesses as Southside Hospital, East Islip Animal Hospital, Overton Funeral Home, Penn Van Meter Architects, Schlimbaum & Schlimbaum Law Office, Bi-County Collision, Harvey Allen Hair Salon, and the Town of Islip.
“It is wonderful that students have the opportunity to make informed decisions about their future careers by shadowing professionals in their own community,” stated Islip High School teacher Susan Riche, who helped organize the event.
Prior to the day, students completed placement applications in order to allow them the best overall experience. Following their shadow day, students completed reflective activities and wrote thank you letters to their mentors.
